Good-bye Joey Gathright

I wrote this morning that after last night's performance, Joey Gathright had to go. This afternoon, the Cubs sent him down to AAA Iowa in order to make room for tonight's starter Randy Wells. Then the Cubs sent Gathright to the Baltimore Orioles for veteran outfielder/infielder Ryan Freel. The Orioles agreed to pay $2.7M of Freel's $3.3M contract, as well as the remaining money on Gathright's contract. I absolutely love this trade! We got rid of the most useless player on our team and got a hard-working, high energy player in return. I can remember seeing countless highlights of Freel making diving catches all over the outfield on a consistent basis. Freel also plays third-base, which means Mike Fontenot can stay at second-base and Aaron Miles ran ride the bench (where he belongs) if Aramis Ramirez were to get injured again. Not to mention we just got Freel for free. I am a little concerned as to why Baltimore was so eager to get rid of this guy? Apparently he was unhappy about playing time, but c'mon Baltimore, you should have gotten more than Gathright in return, but thanks, seriously. Freel is a career .271 hitter with a .357 OBP.
