Cubs Roster Move

Today the Chicago Cubs placed LHP Jason Waddell on the DL and recalled slugger Jake Fox from Iowa. Waddell apparently has an non-baseball injury of some sort, whatever that means, it could be anything. Hopefully he did not get drunk and fall into a dumpster like Chad Gaudin last season. Waddell was used sparingly after being called up to replace the disappointing, Neal Cotts. In 3 appearances spanning 1.2IP, Waddell allowed one run for an ERA of 5.40. I was actually impressed with how Waddell pitched during his few outings. Hopefully the injury is nothing too serious and he will re-join the team soon. Waddell's departure leaves Sean Marshall as the lone lefty out of the Cubs' bullpen. Although I prefer to see Marshall as a long-reliever or starter, I have no problem with Lou Piniella using him as a lefty specialist, Marshall is a better option than Cotts, and has pitched well all season.

This also means that Jake Fox is back, which is good news, the guy can really hit. I do not expect to see Fox starting, but weirder things have happened, like Aaron Miles starting all weekend. Fox could get some playing time at third, or in the outfield. I would not be too surprised if Lou started Fox in left-field against a lefty starter, especially to give the slumping Alfonso Soriano a day off. If tonight's game gets played I would not be shocked if Fox actually got into the line-up against Sox P John Danks. At the very least Fox returns as one of the Cubs' better pinch-hitters, if not the best.
