Cubs waste opportunities, fall to Cards 7-4

The Cubs got off to a rocky start against the visiting Cardinals today. Alfonso Soriano booted a ball down the line that led to a lead-off 3B and eventually cost us a run. The Cubs got back on the board in the bottom of the first when Chris Duncan and Khalil Greene botched a Fukudome blooper. For the second straight game Derrek Lee struck out and Fukudome was caught stealing for an inning-ending double play. This is a terrible combination Lee can't make consistent contact and Fukudome is not a base stealer. Fukudome hit a 3R-HR in the bottom of the 5th to give the Cubs the lead. Right before this happened Cubs analyst Bob Brenly who made a "Jackass Call" yesterday, made up for it by mentioning how hard Fukudome has been working in batting practice to drive the ball to right field more often.

The Cubs pitching sucked. Sean Marshall went 5+ IP, 3ER. He was not impressive and could not get down a sacrifice bunt in his final at-bat. Aaron Heilman relieved Marshall and promptly gave a HR to Greene, blowing the lead. He was lucky too, Duncan was caught stealing earlier in that sequence.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs loaded the bases and Milton Bradley made his home-debut, as a pinch hitter for Heilman. Sure enough he gets ejected, after striking out looking on a questionable 3-2 curve ball, and arguing with the umpire. This umpire was full of shit. The 3-0 pitch was low and the 3-2 curve was inside and low. Bradley was right. We had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth with Bradley and Soriano batting, and we scored no runs.

With the game still tied at the top of the 7th our bullpen takes over loses the game. David Patton walked the leadoff hitter, Joe Thurston (who I can't believe is even a real player) who eventually came around to score. Patton after I praised him yesterday, got burned by 2 walks, and gave up 2 runs taking the loss. Angel Guzman was sighted today giving up a HR to light-hitting rookie 3B Barden, who I've never heard of.

Jackass Call of the Day

Homeplate Umpire Larry Vanover blew two called strikes with Bradley batting and then tossed Bradley for arguing balls and strikes. This guy sucks.
