Soriano hits GW 2-R HR to redeem himself and lift the Cubs over the Cardinals 8-7

The Cubs got off to a good start today against the St. Louis Cardinals. Carlos Zambrano worked an impressive 1-2-3 first inning. While in the bottom half of the first Micah Hoffpauir had and RBI 2B off the right field wall and Aramis Ramirez added and RBI single. Geovanny Soto left two men on to end the inning grounding into a double play.

St.Louis rookie righthander P.J. Walters was making his major league debut and the Cubs had him on the ropes in the 2nd with the bases loaded and nobody out. At this point Alfonso Soriano looks like an ass striking out again! (One of three strikeouts on the day). All we managed was one run off of a Fukudome sac-fly.

In the 3rd inning Zambrano blew up, Derrek Lee botched a play at first, and Ryan Ludwick hit a 3-R HR to take a 4-3 lead. The Cubs evened the score in the bottom of the 5th after Walters left the game. RP Trevor Miller blew the lead giving up an RBI 2B to Ramirez and Soto came to life with an RBI single. In the top of the sixth Zambrano relinquished the lead giving up a HR to Brian Barton. The next inning, Zambrano gave up another HR to Ludwick, I'm not really sure why Z was in the game at this point anyway? In the bottom half of the 7th Ramirez had an RBI 2B with 2 outs.

Soriano redeemed himself hitting a go ahead 2-R HR, he had been 0-4, 3K's before that. In the ninth Carlos Marmol (who was warming up in the 8th) came in and walked the lead-off hitter and then beaned Pujols. Marmol then struck out Ludwick and got Khalil Greene to ground into a double play. Marmol is the man.
